FlexClock - RS232 Bar Code Readers (Gun or Wand)
Any of our Z-Clocks that have an RS232 (COM) port can be enabled to use a bar code reading gun or wand.

Requirements for the Reader:

With our clocks the bar code reader works like a keyboard. You can actually hook your PC up to the clock serial port and type characters into the clock and it will treat them like they were pressed on the clock keypad. The bar code reader simply does the exact same thing.

The bar code reader may also need to be programmed in advance. It simply needs to be told to press ENTER after typing the numbers. The procedure for doing this varies by reader, but it almost always involves scanning special “configuration” bar codes out of the manual, assuming it isn't set this way be default. Please consult your readers manual for more details on programming your device.

Serial cables always go from a PC to a “device”. Whenever you make an exception to that, you need a “null modem” adapter (it is basically a crossover adapter). Since the bar code to a clock is “device to device”, it needs a null modem adapter. Same would be if you connected a PC to another PC.

Connecting the Reader to our Clock:

To enable and connect the reader to work with our clock on the hardware end you will need a “null modem gender changer” (all four words present). We generally do have a supply of the necessary Male to Male Null Modem adapters needed, so we can provide you one if needed. Below is a link to the part you will need to hook the reader to our Z-series Clocks (Z11, Z23/33 and Z24/34):

If you plan on acquiring this type of item please send Support a link first to the device as there are many items like this for sale, and though they may look identical, not all will work due to different pin outs. Again the part you will need is a “null modem gender changer” (all four words present) and must be male on both sides (pins not holes) to work.

As a warning vendors like Radio Shack sell a “null modem” and a “gender changer” but not a “null modem gender changer". We've had people in the past go get the “gender changer” from Radio Shack and then report it didn't work.

Our Z18, Z12, and Z14 clocks require a hard-wired serial connection. There will be a wire diagram printed on the back of the clock for connecting a serial device.

Once the cables have been connected, the clock will need to be set up to accept data from the attached device; to enable this on the clock:

1. Press #, * or MENU twice

2. Enter in the code "77232" then "OK" or "ENTER"

3. It will then ask for the baud rate of your device. You will need to consult the devices manual for the required baud rate.

4. Once the correct baud rate is entered it will give you a list of things you can enable the reader to accept:

1 PIN Entry
2 Prompt I
3 Prompt J
4 Prompt K
5 Prompt X
6 Prompt Y
7 Prompt Z

Pressing the corresponding number will enable/disable the feature.

5. Press "OK" or "ENTER" once you are done to save your settings.
